Remington Sportmaster 512?

Post by Guest »

Hi all,

just a query, a friend of mine has recently bought a Remington
Sportmaster 512; a bolt-action rifle with tubular magazine in caliber
.22

I wanted to find out some more background info on the gun, but so
far I have not found anything on the internet. Could anyone help
me out?

Thanks.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The M/512 was made by Remington from 1939 through 1962. There were nearly 400,000 produced.

I understand that the reminton sportmaster was produced from 1939 -1962. Is there any way to find out the exact date of production? What is the value of this rifle?

Debbie:

There is a barrel code on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. The month and year of manufacture can be determined by entering "Barrel Codes" in the Search RSA box on this home page.

The value depends on condition. They range from $100 to $175.

John:
I searched for Barrel Codes, and got a long list of posts. One had some information, but it does not seem to apply to my M512, which has WHH stamped on the barrel. After that are a couple of indecipherable stamps.

The codes are sometimes difficult to decipher. My guess is that your stamp is WH which would mean Aug, 1939. If so, your rifle should not have a grooved receiver and should have some case coloring on the bolt.

I have no idea what the other H is for. Many Remingtons have an extra letter. I suppose it is just to confuse us...

Confusing indeed. The bolt is case colored. If by grooved receiver you mean the grooves cut for a scope mount - yes, it is grooved and has a scope.

With your new info, my guess now is that it was made in 1961. The H was used in 1939 and used again in 1961. The grooved receiver was not offered until the mid 1950s. Your rifle should not have a serial number.

John:
Right. There is no serial number. When did Remington start numbering these rifles?
