The first 14,000 were serial numbered after that they were batch numbers, it's probably the later.
I'm not sure what you mean by 1/4 inch short, it's only a 1/4 inch???
Right below where you type there is another section with a
filename [ ] browse
where you select the picture and then below
click add the file

They had both, first a serial number then they switched to a batch number, "typically" the ones that were batch numbered were only up to 3 digits but that's set in stone either. There are differences in the front sight and caliber stamping that might help date it. I believe there's also 4 different hammers as well but I don't know it that helps determining a date and if it's serial vs batch. Posting photo's should help then someone who actually knows something other then the basics should help

Actually for clues to production date you need a picture of the front sight and caliber markings.
