The first 14,000 were serial numbered after that they were batch numbers, it's probably the later.
I'm not sure what you mean by 1/4 inch short, it's only a 1/4 inch???

Right below where you type there is another section with a
filename [ ] browse
where you select the picture and then below
click add the file

If that doesn't work mail them to me and I'll post them for you, I would like to see it...

They had both, first a serial number then they switched to a batch number, "typically" the ones that were batch numbered were only up to 3 digits but that's set in stone either. There are differences in the front sight and caliber stamping that might help date it. I believe there's also 4 different hammers as well but I don't know it that helps determining a date and if it's serial vs batch. Posting photo's should help then someone who actually knows something other then the basics should help :D

Actually for clues to production date you need a picture of the front sight and caliber markings.
