The First Quarter 2004 The Last Word, by RSA President George Slatten

The Last Word

It’s always a treat to visit Las Vegas in the wintertime, and this January it was especially welcome as it’s been brutally cold here in the Northeast! The weather in Vegas was terrific for our Annual Meeting, held in conjunction with Beinfield’s Winter Antique Arms Show. As always, Wally was a most gracious host providing accommodations for our Board Meeting on Friday and our Member’s meeting on Saturday. Thank you Wally!

For those of you who haven’t heard, this outstanding show is moving to the Mandalay Bay Resort starting with the May 2004 show. We look forward to our next Annual Meeting, in January 2005, which will be held in the newer facility. The RSA Members meeting was well attended with elections producing the following results:

  • Mike Strietbeck was elected RSA Vice President
  • Ed Hull was re-elected for another term as RSA Director
  • Bob Hatfield was elected to a term as RSA Director
  • Bob Pryor was appointed as the RSA Show & Display Manager

Mike Strietbeck replaces long-time RSA leader Jack Heath as Vice President. Jack has served the RSA long and well, having been instrumental in cementing our relationship with Remington Arms Company management. By Presidential appointment, Jack will continue to serve as RSA Director. He received a heartfelt tribute at the Annual Meeting.

The RSA Board of Directors has decided on a busy schedule for 2004. The Remington Society will be participating in at least three events in addition to our Annual RSA Historical Seminar:

  • RSA will man a display booth at The 133rd NRA Annual Meeting to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 16th and 17th. RSA’s Show Coordinator will be Jim Ciolli Jr. who will exhibit his fine collection of Remington Model 600 and Model 660 carbines.
  • The cream-de-la-cream for the Remington Society is coming on July 28th with the 10th Annual RSA Historical Seminar, to be held at the NRA Headquarters outside of Washington, DC. This “must-attend” event will be limited to the first 100 participants (members and spouses) who sign up with Seminar Chairman Rich Shepler.
  • The Winchester Arms Collectors Association has invited the RSA to display in competition for awards at the WACA Annual Eastern Show, held in West Springfield, MA, October 9th and 10th. All RSA members are invited to display their collections, and we want to have a great turnout, so sign up early!! Contact Carole Chittenden (914) 248-1000 for your reservations. Be sure to visit our website, www.remingtonsociety.com , “Upcoming Events,” for complete details and a downloadable application form.
  • The RSA will also participate The 9th Annual Gun Collectors Show and Conference, hosted by the Houston Gun Collectors Association, in Houston Texas on November 13th and 14th. The NRA is offering $10,000 in display prizes, so plan on bringing out your best Remington displays.

Hard-working Bob Pryor has stepped forward to become the RSA Show & Event Coordinator. Bob will assist any RSA member wishing to participate in show displays for the Society by coordinating the delivery of RSA display materials, providing contact information, and other details necessary to putting on a successful display. If you need to get in touch with Bob, please let me know. He will be responsible for making sure that the Remington Society is well represented at every major gun show in America.

As you can see, we’ve quite an ambitious schedule this year. Let’s get started early and show ’em what Remington collectors can do!

Respectively,

George Slatten

RSA President
