Help Wanted with a Model 700

Post by SFW516 »

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum and I know almost nothing about Remington rifles, but a friend of mine got a model 700 in 30 06 with a wood stock. So I am looking for any info you guys can give me on this gun. I guess first of all how can you find out the date of manufacture? It seems that the gun has no sights on it. So would a scope be a good way to go or some sights? I know this is kind of sketchy, I will try to post more info and a picture later. So just any basic information anybody has would be most appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Stephen:

The month and year of manufacture can be found by checking the barrel code which is located on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. Then type barrel codes in the search RSA box on the RSA home page. The code is displayed there.

I would opt for the scope over having iron sights installed. As a sidenote, the most common problem with getting rifles to shoot accurately is a cheap scope. It can give you a different sight picture every time you use it unless you hold your head in exactly the same place. To test this theory, hold any scope steady or lay it down, then move your head a little. See if the crosshairs move. I have seen some that move the crosshairs by 6" or more at 100 yards. I like Leupold scopes. Not cheap, but good value..

Good luck with your 700. You have a fine rifle.

Sorry about taking so long to get these pics. I know there not the greatest but at least it will give you a visual. So again if anybody has any advice you want to pass on please do, because neither I or the guy who's gun this is knows much about it.

That looks like a Model 700 Mountain Rifle. I just got one for Chirstmas in 30-06. Mine has the detachable magazine. I called Remington's 800 nubmer and asked them about it. They were very helpful. That should be a Walnut stock. I love mine. As John said, don't worry about iron sights. Get a good scope. I went with the Leoupold VARX-II. It's a lot of money, but if taken care of, this gun/scope will last you a lifetime.

That's a Model 700 BDL made 1962 to present. Call Remington and give them the serial # and they will tell you when it was made. Its hard to tell from the pic's but I would guess it was made in the 80's.

Remington: 1-800-243-9700

Let us know what you find out.
Thanks

Doesn't the BDL come with iron sights?

Its hard to tell from the pictures if it had iron sights or not.
To answer your question, yes the DBL's normally came with iron sights. However Remington did have some BDL special runs with a clean barrel (no iron sights).

I did some research and C6217129 was made in 1988.

Thanks alot for all your help. I think my friend will call up Remington and see what he can find out. He is planning on getting a scope for it. So if any of you have any suggestions on what works well, that would be appreciated. Thanks again for your help.
