Model 30S, Lyman Sight HELP!!!

Hey all,
This is my first post on the forum. I was pleasantly surprised to find a sight dedicated to Remingtons!

Here is my quandry. I recentely inherited my great grandfather's Remington 30S rifle. Neat gun built on the Enfield action after WWI. Well, I guess his eyesight got bad enough that he filed out the top section of the Lyman receiver sight (apature type) sometime before I was ever born

I have not been able to figure out what the model # of the sight is, or where I may find a replacement. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Whether it be the model #, or a contact person who could know, or have a replacement, I'd be very greatful.

I'm trying to include pics here so everyone will know what it looks like.

PS. I was trying to get a manufacture date with the serial # and haven't had any luck there either. Does anyone know of a book I could purchase which would have this info?

My field is Remington 22s, but I'll try to help. I checked my Old Gunsights book and the only Lyman sights I found for the M/30S looked nothing like the one in your photo. They all mounted on the side of the receiver. Yours looks like a military style sight slid into the dovetail.

John, I have never seen a military sight like this one. Not to say they don't exist! The rifle that the 30S is based on (1917 Enfield) did have a apature sight between to tall ears on the back of the receiver. Cutting off those ears to create sporting rifles out of the old military actions was a brutal task!! But the 30S came with a nicely rounded rear bridge to the receiver, and of course was dovetailed for this adjustable ramp sight. I only assume it is a Lyman sight becuase the front sight is stamped as being Lyman. Maybe this is a VERY bad assumption on my part???

What you have is a model 30-A. This is the first model introduced in 1921.
The Remington receiver sight was standard when introduced, and only used for a few years. The Model 30 Express was introduced in 1926 and had a buckhorn type sight on the barrel. The Model 30-S was not introduced until 1930, and had the Lyman reciver sight. Since the 30-A is somewhat rare I would think the Remington sight is also. I would check with dealers in sights, for this sight which I believe is unique to the Model 30-A. Since your serial number is quite low I am guessing that it was made in 1921 or'22.
I have one of these rifles and found most of this information looking through old Remington Catalogs and The Blue Book of gun Values.

Thank you very much! Your post explains why I thought I had a 30-S. It was the mention of the receiver sight in the Blue Book that put that notion in my head.

Also strange, is on the Remington website they list the total production for the Model 30 as: "Approximately: 3,000" but then give serial # blocks in the ranges of "Starting: 00001, Ending: 30600" Could the total production number on the website have been a typo? Did they mean 30,000 rifles instead of 3,000? It just doesn't make sense that they would use a range of 30,600 possible numbers to come up with 3,000 serial numbers.

So I guess what it boils down to, is that I need to find Remington apature or a complete rear sight, for a Model 30-A.

Ok, now to research sight dealers:)

Just recently began searching these forums. I see your Rem 30 and it's a nice old piece. Probably shoots as accurately as any thing off the shelf today. I collect them and have five, but mine are probably a couple of years newer than yours. You will probably not find a replacement part. You could have a really professional gunsmith/metalsmith weld up, drill and reprofile the peep to bring it back to original profile. Personally, I would just leave it as is. Please don’t drill any new scope mounting holes in it!!!! Get a newer rifle if your eyes require a scope mounted rifle.

Gunscrounger, No problems there! No holes will be drilled in this rifle as long as I have it:) (or my son one day!) Your are right, I am impressed with the accuracy. With handloads and iron sights, I can regularly do 2 to 2.5 in groups. Occasionally I get a clover leaf:)

As for the sight, I have come to the same conculsion. I think I will have someone weld it up and machine the apeture back.
