I have had this thing sitting in the safe for about 10 years now and don't know much about it. It's a model 8 in 35 Remignton S/N 648xx with a 15 round detachable box magazine marked "Police Officers Equipment Corp St. Joseph, MO Patent Pending" The magazine is also serialized to match the gun and appears to have been done when the magazine was manufactured. When I bought the gun in San Antonio, I was told that it came out of the El Paso Border Patrol, but who knows.
Can anyone shed some light on this particular variant? I have never seen another one with a detachable magazine before.
It shoots great with 5 shot groups running about 3.5" at 100 yards.

Model 8 w/ 15 rd Detachable Magazine
John Henwood in his wonderful books on the Remington Autoloaders wrote about the Remington Autoloaders modified by Peace Officer Equipment Co. John Henwood says that circa 1928 or 29, Peace Officer Equipment Co. began furnishing law enforcement agencies with Remington Model 8s, modified and fitted with a beavertail forearm and a detachable 15 round magazine. Peace Officer Equiment Co. was a subsidiary of Hillyard Chemical Company of St. Joseph, Missouri. Hillyard specialized in industrial floor maintenance supplies and if a public agency placed a large enough order for cleaning supplies they could get a 15 shot Remington as a premium. In addition they would sell the gun directly to police agencies(1935 price was $97.50). I think they are one of the holy grails of collecting Remington Autoloading rifles
