Re: Re Barrel
My opinion I would never rebarrel it. I feel if it needs some kind of modification to make it shoot good then I would wonder about the history of the gun. Im a purist so asking me isnt always the best when it comes to this subject. I personally would never buy a gun that has been bedded outside the factory. If i thought it needed to be bedded I would sell it.

Hi Tony.Powerfisher wrote:I have a 660 in a .243 and would like to rebarrel it with a longer barrel. What do you think? My thought process is to be able to keep a better group at longer distances. My background is not impressive. I have been shooting/hunting since I was a pre teen and have been getting very serious about shooting/hunting for the past two years. I am in my late 40s now. I have little experience with this rifle. I have 2 700s and am quite familiar with what they can do at extended ranges but not this particular rifle. It is new to me and have not found the right load yet. The bore is good. Its a moa shooter but I just cant seem to shrink the grouping. I havent gone out to 200yds + cuz...it shoots moa and I want better. So, stock/bed and bbl? "CAN" it shoot better as is? I have used IMR 4831, IMR 4395, Benchmark and Varget. My goal is to put a 85gr pill on the 10 ring @ 400 yds. I can do this with my 22-250 (55gr Nosler) and mostly 9s with my 30.06 (165gr Nosler). Can this be done with the 660? Any and all help would be nice. Thanks.
Tony
Ask yourself the hypothetical question......."What if I go to all that expense and it still doesn't shoot to my expectations?"
In my opinion, the desirability of the 600s, 660s and 600 Mohawks was due to their handling characteristics and short barrels. Trying to turn one into a long-range tack driver would be a little contrary to their purpose. I have three 600 Mohawks.....a .222, a .243 and a 6mm Rem......and all three will shoot 1/2" - 3/4" groups on a good day. That's good enough to drop a deer (or smaller critters) at up to three hundred yards. If I can't get within that distance, I (usually) won't take the shot. I've always used H4831 or IMR4350 with 80 and 100 gr. bullets loading my 243/6mm cartridges.
I'd say if you you want a longer range tack-driver, start with something like a heavier/longer barreled 700 like the Varmint Special (or some variation).......they're already designed for that purpose.
I also agree with "remington600".
