Model 121 smooth bores (all variations)

Post by merrbarb »

According to another source Remington Model 121 slide action repeaters were produced in four variations of smooth bores. I have a Mo-Skeet-O bore (which, correct me if I am wrong) is a Routledge counter bore produced by Fred Routledge to his specs i.e. counter bored 13 1/2 inches from the muzzle to a dia. of .375 inch. The second could be a "smooth bore" that is a non-counter bored barrel with a dia. of .217 inch. I have seen a Rem. Mo 121, SN 20XXX .22 short, long. long rifle that is roll stamped "smooth bore" just ahead of the caliber inscription but also has the front and rear sight holes filled, and a bead installed as the front sight. As I said this has a roll stamped "smooth bore" on the left side but would have this been a factory produced barrel?? Then there supposedly is a skeet bore that was choked??? I have no clue as to the fourth variation if any. I also heard that the Mo-Skeet-O bore was not a catalog item but was special order only. IS that correct? This is a long post, but several of the recent posts Re: smooth bores have not been answered. Where o where are the experts?? :?

I have two 121 smooth bores. One is marked "Routledge Bore for Long Rifle Shot Cartridges" has a 13 1/4 back bore of .395 diameter. 24 1/2 inch barrel to the bolt face, s/n 186,xxx, date code is XYY.
The other is marked "SMOOTH BORE" and has the 22 short, long and long rifle stamping as well. Has a 12 3/4 back bore of .400 diameter. S/n is 27,xxx date code WH. Neither were cut for rifle sights, both have a bead in front.
A Remington 22 rifle book is in the works which should shed some light on the smoothbores. The authors are the best on the subjects of Remington and on Remington 22 rifles. rem141
