I have a question about the Remington made French Berthier rifles. In researching I have come up with a oddity. the french contracted to Remington for a large number of 8 MM Berthier rifles during the W W I emergency. But I have read in several places that, when the guns arrived, the french was dissatisfied with them for some reason and didn't issue them. Why?
I can't imagine that Remington

would make an unsafe rifle. By that time, Remington had almost a century of experience. During W.W.I, they made over a million military rifles for England and Russia with no trouble. They had access to the finest grades of steel and wood. Remington machining and heat treatment were perfect.
Therefore, why did the French find fault with the delivered product?
