My brother has a 581 .22 lr that has a plug in the stock and in the bottom of the receiver so it functions as a single shot.
My question is was this a factory made option, or was it customized? Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Remington 581
Notes: This weapon is a basic rimfire bolt-action rifle designed for simplicity and low-cost production. It was originally introduced in 1967. It has no iron sights, but is does have a base on top for a telescopic sight. Production of this original model stopped in 1983, and a similar, single-shot model was produced from 1968-1978 and called the Model 580. Another variant of the Model 581 is the Model 582; this version has a tubular underbarrel magazine instead of a box magazine, and was available from 1967-1983. In 1986, the Model 581-S began production; this version has a better finish, checkering on the pistol grip wrist, and the ability to use larger magazines. There is no single-shot version of the Model 581-S, but an adapter was made to turn the Model 581-S into a single-shot rifle. (Except for the magazine capacity, the Model 581-S is identical to Model 581 for game purposes; with a single-shot adapter, it is identical to the Model 580 for game purposes.)
