Model 25 Receiver Plug

Post by Rickster »

Occasionally I see a Mo 25 that doesn't have a plug on the right side of the receiver. It appears that maybe the later ones did not have a plug?

With plug.

My .25-20 is from July of '36 and does not have the plug.

I believe all model 25s are with the plugged hole. I have some that are very hard to see, but they are all plugged. If you look real close at the picture of the gun with "no plug" you can faintly make out the plug. Later guns were probably polished better and that made it harder to detect. A look inside will tell you for sure that a plug exists.

You're right, Tom.
I looked at mine again and can make out a (very) faint outline. Not as obvious as the one pictured.

The reason I bring this up is that I have backed away from buying 25s with no raised plug, because I was suspicious that they might have been aggressively refinished. And although that may sometimes be the case, I occasionally see ones that appear to have original finish, but no raised plug. I have been doing some detective work, and from what I can tell, the transition to a flush plug happened about the time that they started stamping the Model 25 on the side of the receiver. Does that sound about right? Hmmm, "flush plug" sounds like something from a toilet. How about "level plug" instead?
