Thanks for looking. I am continuing a topic that is buried in another post on this forum.
Is there anyone that has a 660 with a five digit serial number? And willing to share the proof on a private email.
I have looked at every 660 that has came up on the auction sites and have not been able to find a 660 with less than 6 digits.
I am investigating this because I have one. Chance are if I have one, there are more out there floating around.
Any feedback will be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Model 660 with 5 digit serial number
The 5 digit serial number is going to be anyones guess. Remington records state that 600s started out at serial number 1000 and ended with 131,552. However there were only a total of 94,028 600s made and 50,536 660s made. I have a letter from Larry Goodstal that says During November of 1968 the number system was changed and started with the model 660 block with 6,200,000. The model 660 and the 600 Mohawk were numbered in this same block up to 6,222,957. The serial number jumped because they added the Mohawk into the picture. I know this doesnt answer your question, but this just prooves trying to figure out the serial number issue is crazy. I am sure you gave a production date at sometime on this forum. I know there are 5 digit guns out there. I have seen them and like I said without digging all of mine out on the top of my head I believe I have 100007 660. I would say 5 digit ones are a little harder to find. I have never been one to really be attracted to serial numbers unless it was number 1 so I cant say I have really been looking.
In regards to your mismatched reciever again its anyones guess. It is very possible that someone picked up the wrong reciever. It is possible that it was sent back for repairs and thats the only reciever they had to fix it. Is there possibly a number 3 stamped on the barrel around the reciever. Are there more then one date codes. I know for a fact that at the end of production for the Remington model 12 they used Remington 121 parts to repair any returns. Post a picture of the date code area. It may also be stamped just below the stock as well. If you never broke down a 600 before they can be a little tricky to get back together.

Re: Model 660 with 5 digit serial number
The 1968 catalog listed a 1 in 9" twist for the .243 Win. (and 6mm Rem.)leadchucker wrote:good day all:
i have a rem660 in .243 win with barrel markings of lr 83 (feb 1968) and a ser# of1081xx.
can anyone tell me the correct rate of twist for this 20" tube, and the left rear of the reciever has two threaded and plugged holes right at the top of the stock line and the stock has a small relief cut in it to accomidate a reciever mounted peep sight,is this a factory item?
thanks Z
The two holes (and filler screws) for the receiver sight were standard factory items, however, the relief cut would not be. On virtually every Remington centerfire rifle I have that has the receiver sight screw holes, the stock partially covers those filler screws. The only exception is on the Mdl. 725 where the stock wood is intentionally designed to be lower than those holes for most of the length of the action.
