Rem 870 20Ga Barrell

Post by Game Hog »

I have a 870 20 Ga S/N V4444xxX mfg in 1980. Remington said it has a heavy gauge barrell. What does that mean? It shoots 2 3/4" shells and is a Mod choke. Can I shoot steel in it?
Thanks

The 'X' on the end of the serial number denotes that is a "heavy frame" or standard weight 870, built on the 12 gauge sized receiver, as opposed to the LW20 lightweight models built on the smaller receiver. Barrels are not interchangable between series.
I believe Remington says you can shoot steel of #2 or smaller shot thru any barrel with a modified or less choke, made after 1950. But, go check on their web site to be sure. It is on there.
What could have happened... did.
