WHY???

Well, in the first place, the case head-size (rim diameter) isn't the same. The .270 uses standard "06" case head (rim) dimensions. The 300 Ultra Mag uses a larger (magnum) size case head (rim).......so, right off, you have a problem with the bolt. The bolt from the .270 would have to be re-machined for a larger diameter and a new extractor would be needed or you'd have to find a magnum bolt that would fit the larger size rim diameter. Then, getting another barrel, having it installed, head-spaced, etc. would be even more expensive.

Bottom line......it would be cheaper to just get a 300 Ultra Mag. (than to have the .270 rebuilt)

No......I take that back......it would be cheaper to just keep the .270 and learn to shoot it well. Even if you reload, the 300 RUM brass is seriously expensive and they use LOTS more powder. Those calibers aren't worth the hype, let alone the added costs, as far as I'm concerned. And, recoil is brutal, too.

The other question I have is...... What are you planning on hunting with it that you can't kill with a .270?
A clean, well-placed shot from a .270 (or anything in the '06-class cartridges) will kill a lot better/cleaner/quicker than a poorly placed shot from a gun that makes you flinch and then have a wounded animal that you have to chase down and use additional shots to try to kill it.
