Help with identifying this shotgun please?

I think this is a model 1873. The serial number is 2736. The Damascus barrels are 30" long. There ia a number 3 stamped on the bottom of each barrel. There is a the number 28 above the serial number. Patent dates below serial number are April 1871 and April 1872. The rib over the barrels is tamped "E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, NY". The finish is a silver color. The steel is engraved with scrollwork everywhere, with a dog and rabbit on the left side and a dog and duck on the right. The but plate looks to be hard rubber. The pistol grip stock is checkered.

The locks of your gun show the fourth pin behind the hammer of Hepburn Patent rebounding lock used on the Model 1875 and subsequent Remington hammer doubles. From the style of your hammers it appears to my eye that your gun is a Model 1875. According to Charles Semmer's book Remington Double Shotguns, the rubber butt plate was used on Grades 5 and higher while the lower grades had a steel butt plate.

I am not sure if it is a 73 lifter or 75. If the hammers go to half cock when you break the barrels open ( 73 ) or they are rebounding hammers (75) Let me have your answer and we will go from there. Jay Huber RSA

When I lift the lever to break the barrels, the hammers do not move. Is that what you need?

Researcher is correct in what he told you. I do however believe your gun was custom engraved . Most of these guns were custom ordered from the factory anyway, direct from Remington. You have a very nice desirable gun. Jay Huber RSA

Thank you both very much. This and a Remington-Hepburn Model 3 were handed down through my brother to me from our grandfather. Since he was born in the mid 1890s, it may have been his father's also.
My other brother remembers our grandfather shooting this shotgun. That must have beenin the mid to late 1950s. I don't know the last time either gun was fired.

Thanks for the extra info. The but plate is checkered as you describe.
