Another Barrel Code Date of Manufacture Question

Post by htsmd »

Good day. This barrel code thing is crazy, and can't find a definitive answer anywhere.
I Now have two 11-48's:
My 410 has a triangle (delta) followed by the alpha letters "EF J", reading from left to right.
Just bought a 28, & it has an anchor followed by the alpha letters "B DJ", reading from left to right.
Have a C&R FFL, and could get the 28 shipped directly to me if I can determine reliably it was made 50 or more years ago.
The way I read the "barrel code location diagram" above the manufacture dates table on your "Dates of Manufacture" web page, the last character (in this case, "J", on both guns) is the "assembly" code.
SO, are the codes for the manufacture dates the two (or sometimes 3) alpha letters immediaately preceding the last character or number from the right? Sounds backwards, but it's the only way I know how to explain it.

Sure could use some assistance on this, and thank you very much in advance for any replys.

I get 1957 and 1959 from "D" and "F", BUT since the barrels can be swapped, the barrels are not a difinitive indicator of when the gun was manufactured. Before I risked getting in trouble with the Feds I would call Remington with the serial number and they can give you a manufacture date.
What could have happened... did.

Thanks Virginian. I looked all over Remington's web site, and couldn't find a number to call them. Completely helpless here...

What an authoritative and informational forum!
This topic and a similar one (both) supported using the 2 (or 3 in the case of the 2-same-letter years) alpha codes preceding the last character on the barrel code to establish year of production. My seller was reassured that the shotgun was indeed produced in 1957. He agreed to ship directly to me (I hold a C&R license), avoiding my necessity of paying a dealer for the transfer.
Both he and I learned much and now use the Remington Society diagram and table to date our Remingtons, now and in the future.
My thanks to Virginian for his posts!
