Model 25 Help Needed

Post by avery53 »

Hi, I just picked up a couple of Remington Pumps, a 12C, and a Model 25 in 25-20.
On the 25, while taking it down for a good cleaning, I noticed the magazine tube was loose.
After I took it apart, I found that it was missing the two magazine screws. (Apparantly someone forgot to install them when they cleaned it)
These are the ones that go through the mag connector, and into the mag tube.
I have been to every gun parts site I can think of to find them, but to no avail.
Numrich, Jack Frist, Popperts, Wisners, etc, nothing.
Does anyone have any ideas where to find them?
How about a picture with a measurement, maybe I could make them?
Help!
Thank you

I know the screws to which you are referring, they essentially are plug screws but have a little "nipple" like protrusion on the end. They are very similar to the "magazine screw" on a Model 14 but without a head and like the M14 screw and they virtually impossible to find.

I have this very talented friend that makes hard to find screws for me and he made me up several of the M14 Magazine Screws which have like 3-4 threads on them. This screw would be even more difficult to make and after what my friend said to me after making those M14
screws ...... I best not ask him to try and make these.

While Remington used some really strange thread sizes you might try some standard plug screws like an 8 X 40, if it threads it will probably be a wee bit too long which would allow you to turn it down a bit to make the nipple. As I said these are like plug screws and fit flush to the surface.

Hi, I tried the set screws from the hardware, they are a different thread.
I had thought if they were right, I could grind the little tit on it, cut the screw off short and notch it for a screwdriver bit, But----------
I may have found a couple correct screws, I'm just waiting for the PO to deliver.
Thanks

Roger all that!

Yes, it would have been incredulous if Remington had used some sort of standard thread on any of their screws but I thought it worth a shot.

I did not get the urge to take one of my M25's apart far enough to expose those screws and experiment with my collection of plug screws.....sorry!

I am curious as to where you found "the screws", they are just nowhere to be found or are they listed anywhere......that is wrong, Numrich does list them and my experience with J.F. is that they are a waste of time and effort.

I have my magazine tube screw, but I just leave it out. I think it's a flimsy arrangement and all you need to do is keep the magazine tube screwed in. Just keep checking to make sure it is screwed in while you are shooting it. The other screw uses the same theory to hold together the magazine connector and the action bar. On my model 25, at least, I can't get those parts separated anyway. I don't see how those parts would unscrew from each other during shooting anyway. I've asked on this forum if any model 25 owners have actually disassembled this rifle to the point of separating the magazine connector from the action bar and have not gotten a response.

The reason I took mine down this far, is that the mag tube was loose.
I found it quite irritating.
If for some reason the screws don't come through, I think I will just put a drop of Loc-tite on the threads.
Mine came apart fairly easily, although after the thing started to unscrew, it got tighter as I went. Running it in and out a couple of times freed it up though. Very fine threads.
After 81 yrs, it needed a good cleaning anyway. :D

By the way avery53, I read or heard a long time ago that these screws are "6-48 plug screws". I think these are pretty cheap and easy to get. You just have to take them in to produce a nub to fit into the slot you see in your rifle. As I said, I think this is a flimsy deal and prefer to leave mine out, just keeping the magazine tube tightened by hand. If you ever get to the point of disassembling your model 25 to the point of removing the magazine connector from the action bar so that these parts can be removed from the receiver, I'd appreciate hearing about it. Those parts in my gun seem to be joined semi-permanently. Perhaps I'll renew my post asking about this. Good luck with the screws
