Re: model 14 barrel sights

The regular 3/8" dovetail and the slot to the rear of it was for the Remington 117-1/2 Wheel Sight which you can find at extremely elevated prices on Ebay or the other gun related sites.
The front portion of the sight went into the dovetail and the "base" for the elevation wheel went into the slot at the rear. Expect to pay from $75 - 125 for a decent wheel sight but the good news is that because of the recession some are going at the lower end of that scale.

I have found that the wheel sight usually did not interfere with a tang sight so the reason for the removal of the rear sight may have been that your gun had the later 701-1/2 Rear Sight that had a longer leaf and a much higher semi-buckhorn type configuration. These sights were standard after "about" 1920ish but the Wheel Sight remained a factory option. All Model 14 barrels were "slotted" for the wheel sight right up until the end of production.

The 701-1/2 sight came in multiple variations but you can easily find one for $25 or less on
any of the auction sites. I have noted that parts for the M14 including sights have become a lot more difficult to locate over the past 3-5 months.

I hope you find this helpful.
