What Model is this and would barrel inserts make it safe?

Post by redwingr »

I see you get this type of question quite often. Can you tell me what model remington this is and about when it was made. Pictures attached. This was my grandfathers 16 gauge shotgun. he died long before I was born but I do remember my dad shooting this back in the 1960's. With the damascus barrels that is probably not a smart thing. Still, I'd like to shoot it and if I put .410 barrel inserts in it would it be safe to shoot?

I'm fairly new to this, but it seems from the Remington library history page: http://www.remington.com/library/histor ... l_1889.asp that 1889's had serial numbers from 30,000 to 105,000 and 200,000 to 260,000. This would fit in the first category - evidently made before 1900.

Many shooters use these old guns with appropriate low pressure loads such as those available from RST or low pressure handloads. I would never be so bold as to state your gun is safe to shoot with any given load, only a competent double gun smith with your gun in hand can make that pronouncement.

From what I can see in the pictures it looks like you have a nice example of a Remington Arms Co. Model 1889. Congrats.
