My 742 still works but....
My 742 still works but....
I just bought a '66 model Woodsmaster. I got it at a gun show and I hadn't done my homework. The action still works but the rail is showing some wear. Is there anything I can do to prolong it's life? Is there anyone who has successfully repaired one?
Re: My 742 still works but....
Well guys, I finally took it to the range. Before I did, I gave it a good cleaning including lapping out the high spots on the rail inside the receiver. There was OBVIOUS damage at the rear of the rail where it's apparent the rotary portion of the bolt is slamming. It looked as though the rail had been hit with a cutting tool. Lapped out all the galling that rose above the rail.
Also lapped the front end of the rail due to slight galling. I don't know how long it will live, but I sure hope It goes a few more years. I did manage to sight in the scope: 4shot group at 100 yards was just over 1" on the bullseye.(180 grain corelokt, .30-06) This was produced with me leaning on a post. NOT from the bench. I can live with that. I also found a machinist willing to make a copy of the receiver correcting for damage to the rail in a tougher material. We may have found a solution to many people's problems. Anyway, I anticipate venison tenderloin this fall!
