model 25 odd sn
it's aa 76xx. What is the aa about? I have never seen this on any other 25. Also, it is not marked rem 25 on the receiver.
Re: model 25 odd sn
The first 14,000 or so Model 25s carried the AA marking by the serial number on the bottom of the receiver. AA indicated the receiver size. Early(until about 94,000) Model 14s were marked with a C and early Model 12s were marked with RW. As to your rifle not being marked "Model 25", until about 14900, the guns did not have any marking on the side of the receiver.

Thanks a lot. I have wondered about this guns marking for years.Tom H wrote:The first 14,000 or so Model 25s carried the AA marking by the serial number on the bottom of the receiver. Re: model 25 odd sn
I sent a e-mail to the address you gave and not sure if you got it. The gun has what I would call xx [or maybe xxx] wood but the # I find stamped on the wood under the buttplate is not the same as the guns SN. Were mismatched stock/gun # normal,or did someone swap the wood?

Jim:
With the model 25s, numbers on stocks and buttplates usually match each other but almost never match the serial of the guns. As a matter of fact, of the ten I have, only serial number 38 is a complete match. That particular gun was made in August, 1922, months before the production line started up in December, 1922.

Sure enough, the buttplate has a # on it,8702 same as the stock. I never noticed the buttplate # before. 10 of them? Lucky bastard.
