I recently acquired a Remington 14 1/2 in 38-40. It has the thumb safety on the bolt, s/n C74XXX, I guess that puts it in the 1919-1920 range.
Nice gun, but it has a buttpad on the stock. I'm trying to figure out if the stock was cut or not. What was the original length of pull on these?
Also, what did the original butt plate look like? Any suggestions as to where to acquire one? I'd sure like to restore this one.
Thanks,

Question on Remingon 14 1/2
Re: Question on Remingon 14 1/2
The length of pull, measured from the center of the trigger to the center of the butt should be about 13 3/8", according to my measurement, for a stock that needs a steel shotgun buttplate. This was the buttplate most commonly used in the serial range of your rifle. If you look on ebay, there is one of these buttplates for sale right now.

Re: Question on Remingon 14 1/2
Thank you, this is very helpful. My gun's LOP is about 13 3/8" if I remove the butt pad and add for normal thickness of a butt plate, so it's likely my buttstock wasn't cut, which is definitely good news. It doesn't appear cut but it's always good to have more details to help confirm that.
This 14 1/2 is a 22.5" bbl rifle. Good gun, with original sights, just an old Redhead butt pad that I'd like to remove.
I appreciate the info very much!
