My wife has a family heirloom handed down from her father. Her understanding is that her father acquired it around the age of 10 (born 1915) and learned to shoot with it, as did she. It was "customized" by her father to fit his stature at the time, shortened stock with homemade but cap and rather crude pistol grip added to the straight grip.
If anyone can do so, I would like to know the month/year of birth.
Markings (Model number "12" not found anywhere);
Top side center of barrel, in front of rear sight dovetail, reading from left side;
REMINGTON ARMS CO., INC., REMINGTON ILION WORKS, ILION, N.Y. MADE IN U.S.A.
PEDERSEN'S PATENTS OC.,12,09,MAR 8,10,JUL.5,10,NOV 21,11, APR 6,12
Top side center of barrel, just in front of receiver;
REMINGTON
REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.
Below above,
.22 SHORT, LONG,
OR LONG RIFLE
Bottom front of receiver
RW
7000 (also found on right side of trigger group frame, not visible when assembled.)
It's missing the rear barrel sight but has two theaded holes in the top of the trigger group frame and an interesting inlay in the stock to the rear of the screw holes. There's two screw holes in the left side of the barrel that are obviously add ons, but for what I'm not certain.
Model 12A date request
Re: Model 12A date request
Your pre-Model 12 was made in 1909. There was a Lyman or King peep sight on the rear at one time. That's why the normal rear sight is missing. The barrel has been replaced since the 1909 rifles were stamped 22 Long Rifle (not short or long). There might be a "3" with two or three letters on the left side of the barrel near the receiver. If so, click the barrel code info (manufacture dates) on the home page. It will tell you the month and year the barrel was made.
Re: Model 12A date request
Mr. Gyde,
I'm impressed sir. I hadn't noticed in my inspection, which I had thought was pretty thorough. But there is indeed a date code on the barrel. I missed as it's mostly obscured by the back edge of the forestock.
CA2, as I understand the code, replaced by a gunsmith (not factory), barrel from April, '54. Correct?
Thank you sir.

Re: Model 12A date request
Nope, that would be April, 1932. Enjoy your rifle...
