Model 12 Date of Manufacture

Post by 1allisman »

Hi. I'm new on the forum and have a couple of questions. I just bought a Model 12 with serial number 317xxx and was wondering what the date of manufacture was. It has an RW above the serial number, which, according to this site, would place the manufacture in 1928. I read elsewhere that RW merely stands for Remington Works, and has nothing to do with the date of manufacture.

Question #2 - How is the bolt removed from the Model 12. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Your serial no. puts you at early 1915. RW stands for Remington Works. Barrel codes were on the side of the barrel just in frony of the action. Why do you want to take it apart?

Thanks for the info. There are no barrel codes on the left side of the barrel by the receiver on this one. I understand they started doing that after 1921. Is that right? As for taking it apart, I just want to give it a really good cleaning. I read somewhere that the bolt could easily be removed without disassembling the gun. Thanks again.

If you take your gun down by loosening your take down screw on the side of the reciever.you can usually slide it out that way. There will be a small flange or step that holds it in, but you should be able to slide it out pretty easily.

It aint that hard. Pull the gun apart using the take-down screw. Rack the action back. Then hold down the little plunger and rack it back farther. Lift up on the back of the breechblock and slide the action forward. Reverse the process to re-install. Even I can do it!!!
