Model 81-D Value

Post by lowgun »

I saw a fairly clean Model 81-D at a show this weekend. It is in 35 Remington caliber, seems to be as manufactured. I don't collect engraved Remington rifles unless they are in my limited price range. What would be an approximate value for an 85 to 90 percent 81-D. On closer inspection, it may even be nicer than that, but I didn't look too closely.

Most of us on this site do not attempt to give values. The rifle you question is a classic example. Is it factory engraved? Are all the parts original? Giving a value without examining a rifle would be a disservice to buyer, seller or both.

Check out the above website, also. There are some pictures in the Gallery of engraved guns. Without seeing the gun, it's hard to determine originality of the engraving. I will venture to say most likely original. There were not as many Model 81's engraved as there were the earlier model 8's.
Value? Somewhere btween $1000 and $10,000. I know that doesn't help, but there aren't a lot of examples out there. Seems like I've seen some listed in the 3 to $6000 range. A lot depends on condition, even more so for the engraved guns.

Long time since I posted this question, have not checked back. Sorry to say that the Model 81 was not on the dealer's table the last time I attended that show. Apparently, someone liked it enough to purchase. Another Model 81 question. Did some Model 81s come from the factory with the wide quick detachable sling swivels like the ones on the Model 30 Express?

So... you want our help. OK. We tried. But...What was the asking price. Maybe you can help us so we'll have a better idea of value....

Sorry, there was no asking price and I couldn't find the gun again. I have made that mistake before.
