I am a novice collector and was given a Remington 1858 from an uncle of mine some years ago. I would like to know the manufacture date.
The top of the barrel reads: "Patented Sept 14. 1858
E. Reminton and Sons, Illion New York. USA"
There is no mention of New Model on the barrel, a notation which I have read about in other posts regarding this pistol. What is the difference? The serial number on the underside of barrel is 95800. Also, there is the "D" stamped into the trigger guard and a "W" on the left side of the frame above the grips. A visible cartouche exists on the left grip that appears to be "J or G, ?, E or C."
Any help or information that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
