Remington Percussion Revolver Queries

I collect Remington perc. revolvers and have three questions that have I have discussed with fellow collectors with no resolve.

The first is why did the bluing flake from the cyl, barrel, and frame with no apparent consistency? I have examples where the bluing flaked on the cyl, but nowhere else. Others flake on the frame, but not the cyl.

Near the cyl. pin on fine examples you often see very small round dents. I assume the pin was stuck. What object would have been used? (After several shots of Crown with friends, the possiblities generate lots of laughs but no answers.)

As to the preservation of finish, some have recommended micro wax, but I like more shine. What is the current thinking on this issue?

I can't give you authoritative answers to the last two parts of your question but, in regards to the irregular flaking, the heat blueing of the time was inherently compromised by a limited knowledge of metallurgy (common among most US manufacturers who relied on outside foreign and domestic vendors for a great deal of their iron derived products), compounded by rudimentary understanding of the importance of precise temperature controls during annealing, tempering and blueing.
