Date my Remington 550-1

Post by Af1991 »

Hey all

First time posting, I recently found grandpas long lost 550-1! Thing is in rough shape but now we have a project. I am having trouble deciphering the letter code for the year on this thing and was wondering what others think it could be.

Thanks in advance Image

That's definitely a tough one. I don't think that the stamp left of the four is a letter. It looks more like a 3. So I would look more at the stamp to the far left. It looks to be an L, so L C would be February 1956. The 550-1 was manufactured ~ 1949–1970s. Sorry, I know it's a guess, I wish I could provide a more definitive answer to your question.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate your perspective on it as I hadn’t given much thought to the far marking. 1956 would make sense with where grandpa was at in his life at that time

Af1991, Now that I have collected data on 914 Remington 550 rifles, I might be able to get you the manufacture date for your rifle. But I will need some information to help narrow the dates down. Can you tell me if your rifle has:

1. Serial Number on the rear, left side of the receiver?
2. If the Model Number on the top of the barrel is a 550, 550-1, 550-l (undefined 1 looks like a line), 550 1 (no "-" Dash mark), 550 l (no "-" dash mark)
3. Does the top of your receiver have just the Tip-Off scope grooves cut into it, or are there the grooves and four lines that run the length of the receiver?
4. If the buttplate screws at slotted or phillpis type screwheads
5. If the bolt is one of the three types in this picture

Welcome! Based on the letter code and what’s visible in the photos, it looks like the rifle dates to the early 1950s, most likely 1950 or 1951. The Remington Society date code chart can be a little confusing, but the stamp placement and wear seem consistent with that period.
