hey guys,
I have an old Remington 581 .22LR that hasn't been used in quite some time. It's been kept in good condition and always in a safe. I was looking over it a few weeks ago to make sure everything worked fine, and it did.
Well this past weekend I tried taking it out shooting to teach a friend how to shoot, and I was showing her how the safety worked. It went back and forth a few times without any problems, but then got stuck in what looked to be the off position. I tried to move it but it wouldn't budge. I then tried shooting it but the trigger seemed to be all the way back as if you just pulled a shot off. The trigger was also stuck back in this position.
Any ideas of what's wrong and if it's possible for me to fix it myself? I've never done any gunsmithing work or even fully tore down a rifle. Also any estimate of what this might cost me? Thanks
Remington 581 safety/trigger problem
Re: Remington 581 safety/trigger problem
I recently adopted a 581 that sat for several years and I had a similar problem. It felt like the trigger and safety was stuck and I thought it was broke also. I've also read about others having same problem.
Your's may just need a cleaning with the trigger internals. I fixed it by removing the barrel and shooting some Remington action cleaner into the trigger mechanism and safety to clean out any crud. Let the cleaner sit for a while. Wipe down and oil.
Good luck.
