40X in 30-06 Single-shot

Post by oneshot onekill »

Edit*** How rude of me! I'm new here and never introduced myself! Call me oneshot. I've been shooting for around 35 years and have owned many Remingtons (and borrowed one from my rich uncle called an M40A1) from Model 1858 Percussion Pistols to my current "Long-range" rifles: A 5R Milspec, A 700 in .243 with a custom heavy barrel and of course, the 40X in 30-06 which is my latest acquisition.

I have an older 40X in 30-06. I'm not able to get a straight answer on the Date of Manufacture (DOM). It's all original and sits in an older McMillan "Smear" pattern stock which is obviously NOT original. The serial number is 0406XXB and it does not have a date code on the barrel. I've inspected this rifle nine-ways-to-Sunday and here are the only markings on the barrel: 30/06 and a profile of a "Diamond" on the left side... and a sideways Triangle with a "T" in it and REP inside an elongated Octagon on the right side. Nothing else. There's an article online called: "The Remington 40X Rifle- A legend in its own time" and according to that article my rifle was made sometime around 1966 or earlier. The author has 2 that he apparently knows the dates on that are 466XXB from 1966 and 631XXB bought by him in 2000!... And I tried calling the Remington 800 number and the people there said '71 to '72. Then I found out the Custom Shop burned in '72 and records were lost. I'm a member of Sniper's Hide with the same user name and have posted all over that forum looking for answers with no luck (including pictures). Then a member there told me I should post here. Any help at all is much appreciated!
