50 Navy Rolling Block Pistol- Bubbah was here!

Post by Lar45 »

Hi everybody, New Guy here.
I picked up a 1866 Navy Rolling Block Pistol. The wood is kind of rough, but the action is very tight. It had a very light trigger.
I did a chamber cast to get an idea of where to start with making ammo for it.
The chamber cast showed a chamber length of 1.075". It has 3 grooves and lands and looks like it's .517".
I bought several boxes of Magtech 32ga brass shells and cut them to length.
56-50 Spencer dies are almost perfect.
I had an Accurate 51-350C 350gn mold for my 500 Linebaugh, so I cast some out of almost pure lead and made some ammo.
I was testing some Black Powder loads today and the hammer started getting caught in the safety notch. Also sometimes when I closed the breach block, the hammer would fall.
Now it won't fire at all and the hammer just goes to the safety notch.
I took it all apart and it looks like Bubba tried to do a trigger job on it.
It looks like the sear on the hammer was stoned down too far, so when you pull the trigger, the sear is inline with the safety notch. I could try to stone down the safety notch and see if it will clear it?
I don't suppose there is a source for replacement parts?
I might have to have the hammer sear welded up and start back on it?

Here's a bunch of pictures.
Any input is appreciated.

I guess I could have put some pictures of it all together.

I ordered a 3D printed jig on Ebay for cutting the 32ga brass down.
It screws right to the harbor freight mini chop saw.

I got it working again.
I cut the sear deeper so it had a more positive engagement.
Then I filed down the top of the safety notch and rounded it towards the backside.
The lip is thinner, but should still be plenty strong enough and now the sear doesn't bounce or catch in the notch on the way down.
It also does not trip when the breach block is closed.
The trigger pull ended up very heavy, so I stoned and polished abit at a time until I got a very crisp 4# 4oz and left it there.
The steel in the hammer cut very easily and I'm worried about the sear rounding off, so I ordered some Cherry Red to case harden that spot.
They are claiming 60 RC surface hardness on 1018.
