Remington 721 - .375 H&H Magnum Rifle

I just bought a rifle on GunBroker.
The seller has the gun at his pawn shop down in Florida where as I'm in Ohio.
He labeled the gun as being Remington model 721 and in .375 H&H Magnum.

Upon a couple people suggesting to me that I should be making sure this gun is actually a H&H Magnum version of the .375, I came to the forums for help.

Can see the receiver is stamped with "Remington 721" on the left side of the receiver, and so that is confirmed.

However the barrel only has "375" stamped into it on the left side of the barrel, and there is no HH along with the 375.

The serial number is "112982" and is located on the left side of the receiver.

The right side of the barrel is stamped with "APEX MATCH GRADE"

1) Based on the barrel, I know the gun is in .375 caliber, but most importantly I need to know how can I be certain this gun is a H&H Magnum?

2) Where is a site that lets us put in serial numbers to find its information?

3) What is an Apex Match Grade?

The barrel is not a factory Remington, the rifle was rebarreled after it left the factory.

The only real way to tell is to pour a chamber cast and compare those dimensions to a drawing of the .375 HH chamber specs. The bolt should have a magnum boltface, and there might be an imprint of a headstamp on the boltface. If an imprint is visible it only tells the case used and not the cartridge.

Apex is the maker of the barrel and "Match Grade" denotes either the quality of the barrel or is used as a marketing tool. This rifle was probably rebarreled several decades ago, I don't recall the thoughts of the shooting community on the Apex brand.

Note ~ The scope base is old style, it has a round groove instead of the the modern square groove. Most of the modern rings use a square shank that fits the square groove.

Good news!

I was able to get through to the seller to let him know my concerns. He was very considerate and helpful.
He assured me that he has personally known the previous gun owner for many years, and he said theyre shop keeps a large variety of misc cartridges just for situations like this whereby the gun isnt fully telling of its caliper.
So he chambered a .375 H&H Mag, Remington 375 Ultra Mag, a Ruger 375, and one other 375 cartridge which the H&H Mag was the only one that chambered properly.

WeW that was a very nice relief!
I'm now not worried about paying for several months on a gun which ended up not being the caliper it was said to be

Well I finally got this Remington 721 .375 H&H paid off several days ago, and the pawn shop had it shipped by UPS and is now showing out for delivery tomorrow!
I had already purchased Nosler 300gr Accubond rounds shortly after putting the gun on layaway.
WeW those rounds will put a guy in the poor house quite quickly! I had to hand out a hundred dollar bill for a mere 20 rounds
....but still very excited to take the first few shots even though the gun doesnt have any iron sites or a scope for it!

It's May 19 -2025 and I picked up the Remington721 .375 H&H Mag today!

The following pictures have Winchester model 70 deluxe rear and front sight next to the gun but as I said in my previous comment I'm wanting to find the original sights to put on it.

And so I'm sending a shout out for anyone who can tell me with certainty as to what sights would of came on this gun, and please provide some pictures of them and any other information including part/model numbers

I'm not sure if I have that specific info tucked away but will check.

Original sights might not work, the barrel contour and diameter are likely different between the two barrels.

FYI, the current scope mounts are old style and most likely not compatible with modern rings, fortunately that is a low cost fix. The cross bars on modern rings are square and fit a square notch, when mounted properly the cross bars act as recoil lugs to prevent slippage.

The original rear sight would have been dovetailed into a boss, there is no easy way to go back to an original style. At this point I would recommend using modern sights of your choosing and have those installed. The rifle is so far from original that using original sights is not really a plus.
