Date on a model 760 .270

Post by Wardf »

I have a rifle that was my grandfathers then my fathers and now mine. Just trying to figure out manufacturing date. I looked up how to tell bull but I can’t make heads or tails out of these marks. Maybe someone here with experience can make them out. This is the left side of the barrel. Thank you for your time.

Looking closely at a rotated blow up, I come up with November, 1954.

Can you tell me how you came up with that? Not doubting you at all, just looking at those marks and thinking they were using some other language. 😁 Thank you very much for deciphering that for me.

As you stated, using clues you provided as in it was your grandfather's and knowing the history of the stampings. Until the late 60s or early 70s, the month and year stamps were separate. Later ones had a 2 character stamp set up that is much cleaner. Then some guessing at the month stamp brought me to an R. Being the assumed A is quite separate, that brings us to the 50s, the time a grandfather would have acquired it.
