M31 Restoration

Post by rak »

I own a M31 in 16g which was my grandfathers. It was given to me 3 months before his death in 1969. The code on the barrel indicates the gun was manufactured in March of 1936. 3 generations of the family have hunted with this gun and I have been toying with the idea of having it restored. I would estimate the finish on the metal is about 80% and the wood is not severly dented or scratched. Checkering is worn on the pistol grip but still somewhat sharp on the forearm. I will, on occasion, still shoot a line of trap with it and it never fails to create a buzz at the club. Your thoughts on the feasibility of restoration would be appreciated.

I've seen a lot of very near perfect restorations of Winchester Model 12s but I have yet to see anyone correctly reproducing the metal finishes of 1930s and 40s vintage Remington shotguns. If you find someone, let us know. I have a 1938 12-gauge Model 31, 26-inch improved cylinder with a solid rib that I shoot very well but it is a real roach.

If it's honest wear I would just let it go. It will serve as a better reminder of your gramps that way. Now if it already had a botched resto I would consider it.
