Model 11 Grade B or C ?

Post by RICH1287 »

I have a 1939 Model 11 shotgun 12 gauge full choke 26" with upgraded hand checkered walnut stock and forearm. It also has machined game scenes, Pheasant on bolt side and Duck on other side. Deluxe PolyChoke and recoil pad added. It is not a "Sportsman" model. Any idea if this is a Grade C or Grade D?

Looks like a typical Model 11 A "Standard" Grade of that vintage to me. When the "Sportsman" first came out circa 1931, it had roll-stamped game scenes featuring three birds on each side of the receiver. Between the 1936 ande 1938 Remington paper this was reduced to one bird on each side and they began putting this roll-stamped scene on the Model 11 A as well. Checkering appeared on the Model 11 A "Standard" Grade between the 1923 and the 1929 catalogues.

This picture is from a Remington Autoloading Shotguns brochure dated 1939 --

P.S. that Poly Choke with the gold lettering is from the late 1950s or later, added long after your gun was new. The pad, if it is a Fray-Mershon could possibly be original to the gun, but not if it is a Pachmayr.

Thank you for taking the time to research my question. You are correct about the PolyChoke and recoil pad being added by my Dad after the purchase. My confusion about the Grade A is the Remington section of the Blue Book of Gun Values states that Grade A had "checkered pistol stock" and does not mention the roll-stamped game scenes. Grade B had "higher grade wood with hand checkered stock and forearm" Looking on GunBroker.com and Guns America, I have found lots of Grade A showing only grip checkering and no bird scenes. They also have Grade B with checkering on both the stock and forearm, but no bird scenes. So from what you are saying, these would be pre-1936? Thanks again for your time!

The non-roll engraved guns would be about pre-1931. As shown in the ad pamphlet above (I have a couple of these pamphlets, too) they had the roll engraving on all the A grade guns.

I have seen these "B" grade guns on the auction sites and do not beleive they are "B" grade guns. They would have had a much higher grade of wood than the A grades. I have been looking at these guns for years and don't think I've EVER seen an actual B grade.
I couple C (trap), D, E, and F's, but no B's.

You have a standard, or A grade gun, in great condition, based on the pictures.
