Check the thread on this site for barrel codes. With that info you can tell the month and year of production.
The 550 & the 550-1 were very popular rifles. They were made from June 1941 through 1971. Production totalled 764,573.

If it was made before Oct 1967 it won't have a serial #. The only exceptions I know of are guns exported by the factory.
