Not gonna lie, I’m always excited finding another 1858 New Army. I need help with any background you may be able to offer. I’ll try to be as descriptive as I can.
Serial Number 121XXX is on the barrel, frame, and the underside of the trigger guard. Its hard to tell on the cylinder, but on the nipple end it appears to be 1916, with what also appears to be a P ?!
On the left side of the frame by the barrel threads is a G, and on the outside of the cylinder is a G and 180 degrees on the other side is a W
Besides the normal inspection marks, Under the trigger guard on the frame is 7 and 7.
On the bottom of left grip is a cartouche I can’t make out. On the right grip which is in rough shape, looks like the same cartouch but then in the middle of that grip it looks like it stamped CAV ??
What do you guys think ?? Any help would be amazing !!

Re: HELP !! New 1858 Find
Hi Nodakr,
Your gun was made in Dec 1864, and the letters are sub-Inspector's marks. meaning the gun was bought by the government. The CGC cartouche was C.G. Curtis, but he inspected in the early part of the war, 1862, which doesn't match with the Dec 1864. manufactured date, so the grips could be replacements.
There is GRC, an unknown inspector, whose cartouche is found on double cartouched guns. The stamping is also unknown, since Rem didn't stamp the grips. Maybe a post war company mark. The number on the cylinder is also unusual because Rem didn't mark the cylinders with the serial number, you found the only 3 places that Rem put the serial number.
Well, that's about it. Not a lot we can tell about this gun.

Re: HELP !! New 1858 Find
Have you ever come across a grip stamped CAV ? That stamping is in the middle of the left grip.
I updated some of the photos for reference

Nope, never saw that marking before. The only markings that I've seen stamped into a Rem grip were done after it left the factory.
