Help identify a Redfield scope mount on a Rem. 700
I just received a Rem. 700 I bid on from GunBroker and it came with an older Redfield 3x-9x 1" tubed scope on a one piece scope base with 2 Redfield rings. Under the rear bell is what appears to be some sort of flip up/flip down lever. This small lever is rounded and has a hole in the center of it and there are 2 very small screws on either side of this lever. Not wanting to fool with it until I check it out and understand its function I'm not familiar with this set up. I especially don't want to shoot the rifle and have the scope come flying off because of something I did while fooling with this flip up/flip down lever. The scope still appears to be tight to the base but I would like more information on this style of scope base and how and why this flip up/flip down lever works. It's not like anything I have ever seen before (not that I am all that scope smart) but this mount is really weird. I don't know, maybe its something really cool and convenient . Then again maybe it's just a cheap POS. Any helpful responses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Richard.

Without seeing it its hard to say, but it sounds like a quick release scope base. If so if you flip the lever in one direction the scope and rings should pull off. A picture would be very helpfull.

I believe it is called a "ghost ring" but I don't know why. What it is is a rear peep style site to use if your scope becomes unusable and has to be removed. In some cases the owners remove the factory rear site off the barrel to clear the objective bell of larger diameter scopes. This way you can still use the rifle if you flip up the peep as long as the front site is available to use. I have one on a M600 and one for a 788. They are sorta rare as they haven't been made that way for some time.

Well 600RemingtonGuy you are exactly right. I should have caught that feature but because the scope was in place the peep (ghost ring) wouldn't come all the way up. Now that I know what the flip up/flip down device is for it all makes sense. And yes the front sight is intact and hooded while the rear sight is missing. I see where the hole in the peep sight is rather large after further examination and that would make what appears to be a rather nice ghost ring. Very good info and I thank you. Richard (Virginia).
