Need help with DOM for my 22 rifle

Post by rumford »

This is my first visit to the RSA site and I'm hoping someone out there can help me identify the DOM for a 22 caliber rifle which was originally owned by my grandfather.... and my Dad has now entrusted to me. On its left side above the trigger guard, centered below the screws, it is marked "MODEL 4" with the numbers "348635" beneath. I tried to use the convention described on this site for the left and right side of the barrel for rifles manufactured after 1921... but the only markings on the barrel of this rifle are centered on its underside and consist of the numbers "348635" followed by "AX" then two symbols... the first I would describe as a sickle, followed by an anchor. The top of the barrel directly behind the rear sight is marked with the underlined word "Remington", beneath which are the words "TRADE MARK" (1st line); "22 SHORT, LONG" (2nd line); "OR LONG RIFLE." (3rd line). In front of the rear sight are two lines of print. First, "REMINGTON ARMS CO,INC. REMINGTON" and second, "ILION WORKS. ILION N.Y. MADE IN U.S.A." Final markings are on center of butt plate consisting of a circle containing "REMINGTON" over the letters "UMC". The words "TRADE MARK" appear beneath the circle along its circumference. No other markings were found. The rifle is approx. 37 inches overall with a 21.75 inch barrel and is in its original condition. Any info would be greatly appreciated..... what a great network RSA provides! Thanks in advance.

Cliff,
If I goof someone will correct me but AX is March 1929 which sounds about right to me considering they stopped making them in 1933 at approximately 356,000.
