Can someone please help identify? What do I have.

I was given this rifle after my grandfather passed away. From what I can tell he has had it since 1963. He was an avid gun collector in his younger days. The serial number is on a piece of metal that is just attached to and directly behind the trigger guard.

Your gun looks like the Model 1-1/2 Sporting Rifle made from the 1880's to around 1900.
If the upper tang is the same length as the bottom tang then the gun is the Model 1-1/2, if
the bottom tang is longer then the upper tang then it's the Model 1, Sporting Rifle.
The Model 1-1/2 were made in small bore calibers, generally from .22 to 44-40.

Lets see a pic of the left side of the receiver and the bottom tang.

Looks like a #1 1/2 Model to me also. A flat sided #1 octagon top would very rare, and it appears this might be a .22RF, so likely a 1 1/2.

It could be a #1 Remington rolling block, or a #1-1/2. It is a sporter model, which is less common. If you measure the thickness of the receiver and compare the lengths of the tangs on the action you should be able to tell which one it is.

Here is a #1 sporter that I had restored for comparison. It was originally in .38 Long. It now is chambered for .38 Spc. and .357 Mag.
