A friend has this Reminton 1858 .cal 36 serial 349-- with an extra number on the side and London proof. Anyone who can tell more about it? why the extra no.?
Hi,
There are no records of Navy serial numbers produced after the Civil War. Estimates were that Remington was producing about 200 Navy Revolvers per month the last nine month of 1865. If that rate continued into 1866 your friend’s revolver would have been manufactured in June of 1866. The London Proof marks indicate the revolver was once in England. I have a double action Belt Revolver with London Proof Marks. I suspect the extra number is a rack number stamped there after the revolver left the factory.
