Targetmaster model 41 no serial

I have a Targetmaster model 41. It has no serial# on it and no indication that there ever was one. Any thoughts about why?

Don't hold me to this, serial numbers never been that important to me unless it was NO.1. I believe Remingtons were not required to put serial numbers on there rifles until 1936.

Remington started putting serial numbers on all .22s in October 1967 to comply with the 1968 requirements. Before that, it was hit and miss. Remington started putting serial numbers on M/41s in mid-1936. Before that they had no serial #. The barrel code will tell you the month and year of manufacture. Check the barrel code sticky on this site.

I am not sure if this is the answer to your question but prior to 1968 Rimfire guns were not required to have serial numbers. I know for a fact that marlin .22 rifles were not serial numbered I am not sure about Remingtons.

Which ones? I've never seen a Marlin lever that wasn't... At least post 98 I haven't examined that many pre-1898's.
The 39's started in 1922 with serial, 1925 with S prefix, and HS in 1932 until 1936 and I thought the 39A "Goldens" starting in 1939 did at least all 39A's I've seen. I've never looked at a bolt Marlin or could identify one in a pile...
I don't know Marlins well but I thought the 91 turned into a 92 into a 93 and then a 97 but it was also in 32 or something so I thought they had to serial it up to 1915/6?
I only own one Marlin 39 from the 20's so I'm light on info.

Ah, the "Levermatic" forgot about them...

M meaning 22 Magnum?
I didn't know they made a 56M only a 57M, odd to have otherwise identical rifles one that requires a serial the other that doesn't and you don't mark both....

they didn`t have serial# back then but there were 307.000 made and you should find a number of what oder it was made on the bottum of the barrel and the end of the stock check and see and

Two small additions... The 41AS & PS were chambered for .22 Remington Special (same as wrf). They didn't group very well, so not too many were made. Also, at the end of production there was a M/41-2 that had a 24" barrel. They are even harder to find than the Rem Specs.
