An unusual Improved Model 6
Re: An unusual Improved Model 6
Your rifle was made in Jan 1931 (date code BZ) so use in 1920 is at least doubtful. The Imp M/6 was made from 1929-1933. The extra letters are proof/inspector marks. The stock and forearm configuration look to be factory, but no options other than the standard American Walnut were listed by Rem. It looks like the barrel on yours has been shortened and relined? It started out at 20"

That stock looks like and most likely birch.

I agree. It looks like a factory configuration & I doubt very strongly that they would have used maple.

I know this an old thread and there was a disagreement on the wood species. But I have an improved model 6 that is within 50 of this one serial number wise and I have a birch stock as well. I thought these guns were all walnut stocked. Any insight on this.

Surprised to see a recent comment on this rifle. Don't know what kind of wood it is but it sure is beautiful for a cheap (at the time) rifle. Also curious about the shortened barrel and the letters after the "BZ" date stamp. If these are proof/inspectors marks are other Model 6s also marked this way. Whoever shortened the barrel did a great job, take another look at the muzzle. Based on the oral history I'm wondering if this rifle could have been altered for police or security use. Guess I'll never know.
