Model 14 - Can it be dated?

Post by ThisWayOrThat »

My father recently gave me his stash of rifles and shotguns. Among them are:

LC Smith Eagle - Amazing condition
LC Smith Ideal - OK condition
Remington Sportsman - Looks pretty good
Savage 99 - Again, looks pretty good

And a Remington Model 14 .25ca

The serial number is 1188xx and from looking at http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/questions/FR20 it looks like it's from 1929, but that doesn't really match up the barrel stamps. I'll make a similar post in the shotgun forum about the Sportsman.

The, what I see as "XX", indicates a rifle built 12/29. EXX3 shows that it was "returned to the factory for repair" in October, 1951. The partial serial number is consistent with rifles in my database made in late 1929.....tom
