A friend recently handed me a Remington New Model Army 1858 .44 cal.
He wanted to know if there was anything I could do to clean it up a bit.
Unfortunately it has some surface rust and the cylinder is nasty.
I told him we need to be careful of anything you do to old guns like this, so as not to ruin it's value.
Which brings me to my question.
Can anyone tell me what all these numbers/letters mean?
When it was made?
Approximate value range, and any other info you have?
On the top of the barrel it says Patent Sept. 14, 1858 E. Remington and Sons Ilion New York USA New Model
It has an 8" Octagonal bore in .44 cal.
Serial number is 59815, matches under left grip number.
There are a bunch of "P" and "D" markings on it.
I can't see a cartouche on either grip, that some people on this forum mention.
Where is it supposed to be?
Action is tight, everything works, has a decent brown patina and no major defects.
Sorry I don't have any pictures at this time, maybe I can figure out that later.
Thanks for any help you can give me on this matter.
Tommy
