Well for starters, it isn't mid to late 50s, because it wasn't introduced until 1963. Suggest you go to www.remington.com and download and read an owner's manual.
I have owned one or more Model 1100s since 1963, and I have never had any issues with them cycling properly with any 1-1/8 ounce load. There are no "adjustments". Give it a good cleaning from stem to stern, including the action spring and tube, and the gas ports, make sure the piston, piston seal, and 'O' ring are all in good shape and installed correctly, and see how it does then.
