Hello all, I'm brand new to the site. I've tried the search function to find the manufacture date of my old 870 wingmaster 20 ga. The link I found said the date ( on the left side of the barrel) is invalid. The number on the left side of the barrel is A 77. The serial number is 233063X. I can't find serial number runs on the remington site either. Any help would be much appreciated. This was my Father's gun and he let me hunt with it from the time I was 11 or 12. He passed away in '91 and I'm very proud to have been able to preserve this piece of our time together. I plan to share it with my son in a few years. Thanks.

Older 870 wingmaster 20 ga. Can't find manufacture date.
Is it possible that the 3 letter code on the left side of the barrel did'nt get stamped squarely? I thought it read A77, but according the http://armscollectors.com/sn/remdates.php site, they should all be letters. I typed in AZZ on their search and it says it was manufactured in march of 1953. I was born in '65 and I know my Dad had the gun before that so I guess its possible. I just wanted to make sure that their are'nt supposed to be any numbers (only letters) in the 3 letter code on the barrel. Again, any input would be appreciated. Thanks,
Tim

Can you post a picture of this shotgun for us to see?
Take close up pictures of the markings on the barrel and the reciever.
I'm sure that if you went through the serial numbers on this site - you could figure out when it was manufactured.
But for me - what does it matter when it was made, as long as it works and you are not going to get rid of it.
My brother Steve has my dad's Wingmaster 870 20 ga that was made in 1954 and was the first Remington that my family ever bought.
It looks as though it was dragged on a rope behind a pick up truck down a dirt road for a mile or two. But it shoots as smooth as the day it was new.
All the blue is wore off the gun and dad had a Poly Choke installed because of a problem with the hardness / heat treat in the barrel.

Thanks for the reply, rifleman. I'll try to post some pics later in the week. I'm pretty sure the A77 on the left side of the barrel, just ahead of the receiver is an AZZ. The Z's must not have been square with the barrel when stamped. This gun is in great working condition and it will never leave my family. My son just got an early Christmas present, a Daisy Red Rider BB gun. He's grinning ear to ear. He's memorizing the safety manual right now and asking me to quiz him. We have to wait till this week end to set up our shooting gallery outside. What a great Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and yours,
Tim
