Remington Model 14 caliber .32 Remington: Date of man.?

Post by Greg T »

Hello! Found this nice old rifle today at the local gunshop. Serial number G9803. Any idea when it was made? What type of buttplate did it have? the previous owner has "installed" a recoil pad, apparently years ago. Also of note is the blue is almost all there---except it now brown! The bore is perfect. My intention is to shoot this rifle with converted .30-30 casings and cast bullets. I may have more questions as soon as I get it home. Thanks again for your help.

Your rifle was not made to shoot the 30-30 Win round. I was made for the 32 Remington (not the same case). The receiver was made in 1913. The correct plate for your rifle would be a hard rubber shotgun plate with UMC embrosed on it or a special order steel rifle plate with tang. The steel rifle plate for that period also had the ball UMC emblem.

Don't shoot 30-30 Win in this gun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not going to shoot .30-30!!

I guess there are a couple ways to read this! I was going to take .30-30 empty casings, turn off the rim, cut in an extractor groove and resize in a .32 Remington Special die until it fits the chamber of the rifle and allows the bolt to close up. No danger! I'm not going to try to shoot .30-30 ammo or use the casing as-is! But, I did look on the Buffalo Arms site and ordered 100 .30 Remington cases that I will open up to .32 Remington caliber. That is a lot easier than machining the brass! I would guess that the groove diameter is .321" as it is for the .32 Remington Special. I've got some beautiful 165 grain Lyman cast bullets that can also be sized and used in the .32 Remington that are excellent shooters in my Dad's old 94 Winchester carbine (1938) in the .32 Remington Special.. I had a feeling it was a shotgun type buttplate. Thanks for confirming that! I think I will look for a replica plate as I can imagine the cost of an original if one could ever be found. Any idea who might make such a replica buttplate?
I have always wanted one of these Model 14's! It should be a very nice shooter. Thanks again!

Sounds like you got the ammo thing well under control. If you ceck the RSA home page under service and parts, you might find a source for the plate. The Model 14 is quite sensitive on bullet profile concerning feeding. I don't know how well it will do with the cast bullets. OAL is very important.
Best of luck.

Good Morning! I hope the rifle feeds correctly. If it can handle the old, round nosed Remington Core-lokt bullet, then I should be in business as the cast slug has a profile similar to that one. Some of the lever guns will give you fits with cartridge overall length and if you jam a round in the action, you have some taking apart to do.... I imagine the pump guns are the same. Thanks for the tips on this rifle and I will put out some photos as soon as I get it home.
