Rem. 700 VSF .308/New gun

Post by austexsig »

Hi everyone, new to the society and have some questions. I own several Rem. shotguns, all are exceptional. I recently purchased a 700 VSF in .308 and it is the first Rem. rifle I have owned. Does anyone else here on the society own one, and what type of scope do you all recommend as an all around scope for hunting everything from varmints to deer in this part of Central Texas? Thank you in advance for the info.

This site is more about collecting than shooting but you have a fair question. You have to match the scope to both the the rifle and what you are using it for. If you are shooting small targets at long rane, you need a high power scope. In general, the more you pay, the better the scope. The problem comes when you want to shoot a 25yd shot. A 4x or less power is needed in that situation. So the compromise is a vairiable power scope. There are many brands and price ranges. I am using leopold scopes on my varmint guns. They get to be a bit salty but seem to have a goot following. I have hunted deer for years with a 6 x 18 Redfield but rarely go above 10-X. The scope isn't clear on high power but still works. The average hunter and part time varmenter uses a 4x12 or 6x18 class scope. Any more power means hunting with the rifle supported in a fixed position. So get the best scope that fits you budget and matches your style of hunting. Try to get to a store where you can compare several brands and models side by side.

Rifle scopes are like computers. What was the very best today will be beat by a $100 Tasco tomorrow.

Just as Shot1too said, your best bet is to buy what you can afford and compare several models before you make your decision. One word of advice is to stay away from anything sold on ebay or Wal Mart.

Leupold was the industry standard for many years for hunters and compeditive shooters. But, you will find that a Bushnell Banner Elite 3200 5 x 15 in either 40 mm or 50 mm will do a very fine job for less than half the money of the Leupolds. That is my scope of choice.

The reason for that is the adjustable objective and variable power with parrallax adjustment and it even comes standard with a removeable shade.

Another good option would be a Swarovski - AV series has a 1 inch tube and the PH has a 30 mm tube - which will not fit in standard 1 inch mounts but does transmit more light than the AV.
Their cost is around $1000 - $1300
